Registrations open for the PAD-ID Card 2025 Challenge powered by Facephi, to be held at IJCB 2025 in Japan

At Facephi, we believe that innovation must go hand in hand with research. That’s why we’re organizing the second edition of the PAD-ID Card Challenge 2025 (Presentation Attack Detection on Identity Cards), which has been accepted as part of the International Joint Conference on Biometrics (IJCB) 2025 — the world’s leading event in the field of biometrics. This challenge is made possible through the collaboration between researchers from Facephi and other prestigious institutions such as Hochschule Darmstadt and Fraunhofer IGD.

This initiative responds to a key need in the sector and scientific community: until now, there has been no independent and rigorous international evaluation on presentation attacks on identity cards. That’s why we’ve taken a step forward to promote scientific collaboration and contribute to new standards that strengthen digital identity security. Results from the previous 2024 edition showed that PAD on ID cards remains a challenge, with significant room for improvement to achieve generalization across documents from different countries.

What is the challenge about?

Participants will test their presentation attack detection systems for ID cards across two main tracks:

  • Track 1 – Algorithms: This track evaluates different algorithms used to train PAD systems on a common database. The goal is to detect attacks using printed, screen-presented, or bona fide identity cards made with materials such as PVC. This is a 100% research-oriented approach.
  • Track 2 – Models: This track evaluates full models and algorithms against fraud attempts with no restrictions on the training dataset. Participants may use and supplement the data with their own, offering a more realistic view of commercial applications.

Participating in this challenge provides valuable insight into the current difficulties of PAD systems and allows algorithms to undergo an independent and objective evaluation, comparing them with the state of the art in presentation attack detection on identity cards.

Additionally, participants this year will have access to a new automatic online evaluation platform, which follows a rigorous testing protocol designed by experts — ensuring a structured and reliable methodology.

This competition offers international recognition in a critical area for digital security, such as digital onboarding, while boosting visibility within the scientific and business communities.

At Facephi, we reaffirm our commitment to R&D and to advancing solutions that protect digital identity in an increasingly connected world.

If you would like to participate in this challenge, the platform will remain open until May 31st. Register here!
